The "Peaceful" Watauga River

This is a photo of the Watauga River, just a short walk from my house.

On the river there are many places that appear to be just as peaceful as the photo above.

Though the river hosts many places along it that are popular among the college students in the area, it should be noted that the river did not meet the EPA's standard for E-coli as of last July.
The river also has several different places where you can see parts of the past. The photo above shows the remains of the Flat Shoals bridge, which was destroyed during the '40 flood, never to be rebuilt.

All of that to say, looks can be deceiving. The Watauga River may look in some places just to be a peaceful, boring, fresh water river with little danger...
But beware of the roaring falls, called the "Foaming Hole" by locals. The inconspicuous falls has claimed a handful of lives because the water creates a suction that can hold a person under the water until they drowned. At least according to the stories I've heard my whole life.

  1. The photos have a great composition. Not everything is in the center, which is something many tend to do (including myself). The sky and trees in the foreground of the first photo create a good contrast. The fifth photo looks like a painting (which is remarkable). The only thing I see a problem with is the fourth picture. I do not know if it is the lighting, the composition, or the angle, but it seems a little flat (it's probably just me seeing that).

  2. Nice to see a range of issues discussed that would not be evident from the images alone. I would encourage a few more perhaps showing some of the contemporary inhabitants or uses. The flow could be even more seamless if the images were edited to be a little more close in tonal value. The water and rocks are seen at unique angles and help to showcase the variety of textures and speed of the current.

  3. I really like that not all of your photos (and descriptions) show a not so pleasant side of the river, the bad sides seem to be often over looked. The contrast between your first two photos and the last to are really nice I think it proves your point well. I also really like your fourth picture seeing the things that have been left behind are always interesting to me.
